the importance of knowing how to light a fire

... I would say that knowing how to light a fire and know that food is one of the most important techniques of scouting for an explorer and a guide (in the final for a scout) and I think that is so important that at the beginning of training leaders, after a training camp, was delivered to the Wood Badge (soon I'll make a post explaining what it is), a notebook and a leather lace with a round section that was used for lighting the fire by the method of "bow and drill" technique required of a leader to demonstrate his ability to scout and pride of the school fields at the time. This loop was brought normally in your pocket until the day when a leader was planning to weave a "turkish head" and use it to the now known (one could say that was just the era versions of "Christmas tree" for scarves ).
However the importance of a fire remains. power is essential to its ability to create and use bait. In this case, for bait (a salute to Julius who usually goes there with his baits to fish in the river) means any material that can catch fire very quickly and give life to the fire. bait, natural or otherwise, are the Diavolina, or similar combustible liquids which soak a piece of wood or a piece of cloth, magnesium, dry bark (birch that takes well over time wet), very thin twigs, wood chips (better than conifer resin), dry leaves or straw, dried dung of herbivores, nests abandoned, dried mushrooms, paper, cotton wool, gauze bandages, string (not synthetic) frayed, fibrous or woolly plants, birds' feathers, animal fur, etc..
is usually always good to have with them in a waterproof bag a small amount of bait. A recipe for a lure that you can easily make yourself at home and that is very useful if you have to light a fire with wet wood (but is fine even in situations of non-humidity) is as follows:

  1. Take a sheet of newspaper

  2. bends so as to obtain a strip a couple of inches wide

  3. Coils on the strip itself, and binds with a bit of twine cordino8o)

  4. Take a pot (preferably not the one who will subsequently lead to the outputs or summer camps) and we bring you the mozzicotti candle (easily found at the supermarket or in-house course is best to advise their parents, partners, grandparents, etc., in both cases-)

  5. You put the pot on the stove with the candles inside the house: in a short time the candles wax becomes liquid.

  6. Now take the rolled strip and then immersed in liquid wax.

  7. The strip is removed from the pot and put in the sun waiting for the wax to solidify

  8. The bait is finally ready

  9. finally Remember to clean the jug with hot water and soap (otherwise the wax solidifies again) and put everything in order

Three tips:

  • Take the strip rolled and tied with the sticks or boxcutters or with forks: better not use my hands to take it back, so as to avoid unnecessary burns

  • We do at least a dozen bands before you melt the wax and dip the strips

  • We put the strips at rest (the ones, the wax of which is drying) on \u200b\u200btwo sheets of newspaper to avoid soiling.
